Understanding what's wrong with a photo helps you know what to expect from restoration. Here are the most common damage types in family history collections:
The most universal problem. Color photos from the 1970s–1990s fade dramatically — especially the cheaper consumer prints. Reds shift to orange. Blues go purple. Greens vanish. Black-and-white photos yellow and lose contrast.

A common disaster: photos stored in humid conditions stick together. Attempting to separate them often tears both prints.
Recommendation: Do NOT attempt to separate physically without consulting a conservator. For digital work, scan what you can see and use AI to fill in obscured areas.

Before you scan anything, handle your originals carefully:
Wear cotton gloves when handling prints. Oils from your skin cause long-term damage to photographic emulsions. Lint-free cotton gloves cost about $5 at any archival supply store.

- Standard prints (4×6 to 8×10): 600 DPI minimum, 1200 DPI preferred
