Every photograph is a chemical event frozen in time. The image you see is the result of a series of carefully controlled chemical reactions: exposure, development, stop bath, fixation, washing, drying. When any of those steps goes wrong, the photograph carries the evidence.
I work with chemically contaminated photographs regularly. They come from home darkrooms where someone was learning the craft, from commercial labs that were having a bad day, from photographs that were partially processed and then forgotten for decades. Each type of contamination has its own visual signature and its own restoration approach.
Types of Chemical Contamination
Incomplete fixing leaves undissolved silver halides in the emulsion. These silver halides darken over time when exposed to light, producing a characteristic mottled gray fog — often uneven, denser in areas where the fixer didn't penetrate. The image fades as the remaining silver compounds break down.
Exhausted developer produces flat, muddy images without full shadow detail. The characteristic look is a reduction in maximum density — the blacks are gray, the image lacks contrast.
Fixer contamination produces distinctive yellow-brown stains, most concentrated in areas where the chemical pooled. Unlike overall yellowing from age, fixer stains have sharp edges and a particular warm-brown color.
Wash failure — not washing the print long enough after fixing — leaves residual fixer in the paper. This manifests over decades as a warm overall stain, starting from the edges where fixer concentration was highest.
Reticulation happens when gelatin emulsion is subjected to rapid temperature changes during processing. The emulsion shrinks and wrinkles, creating a texture like alligator skin. This is a physical deformation, not a chemical stain, and AI restoration handles it differently.
AI Approaches to Chemical Damage
The good news: chemical contamination often leaves the underlying image intact beneath the visual damage. This makes it more recoverable than physical damage (tearing, missing areas) where information is genuinely absent.
AI restoration can often effectively remove the visual effects of fixer stains and partial fixing failures. The model identifies the contamination pattern and reconstructs plausible underlying detail.
Reticulation is harder. The texture itself is distinctive and can be reduced with careful processing, but heavily reticulated prints retain a somewhat textured quality even after restoration.
For the most severe chemical contamination — photographs that have faded almost completely from incomplete fixing — results are limited. When the silver image has largely broken down, there's little remaining information to work with.
