Restoring Crinkled and Wrinkled Photographs
Severely crinkled or wrinkled photographs present both a physical challenge (the distortion makes scanning difficult) and a digital restoration challenge (the surface creases create shadow patterns that interfere with the image). Photographs can become crinkled from humidity cycling (causing the paper support to expand and contract), from being crushed under heavy objects, or from being carelessly stored in envelopes or boxes without support. Some wrinkled photographs can be carefully flattened; others require digital approaches to address the distortion.
Physical Flattening Techniques
For moderately wrinkled photographs that have not cracked, gentle humidification and pressing can sometimes restore a flat surface. Place the photograph face-down on a clean, smooth surface. Apply a very slightly damp blotter to the back of the photograph for 5-10 minutes — just enough moisture to relax the paper fibers, not to wet the emulsion. Then transfer the photo (still face-down) to a clean dry blotter, cover with another blotter and several heavy books, and allow to dry under pressure for 24 hours. This process works well for paper prints that are not too severely warped; it's less effective for photographs where the warping has caused cracking.
Scanning Warped Photographs
Photographs that can't be safely flattened require special handling during scanning. On a flatbed scanner, avoid pressing a warped photograph flat with the scanner lid — the mechanical pressure can crack a photograph that has become rigid in its warped state. Instead, use the scanner with the lid fully open (or removed if possible), accept that the unfocused areas away from the glass surface will be somewhat softer, and post-process the scan to address the geometric distortion. Alternatively, a copy stand setup with a camera can photograph the document under raking light that reveals the surface texture, allowing subsequent digital correction of the distortion.
Digital Geometric Correction
AI restoration and photo editing software can address the visual impact of surface distortion in several ways. Geometric distortion correction tools can straighten lines that appear curved due to physical warping. Shadow patterns from surface creases can be identified by the AI and corrected by averaging the tonal information on either side of each crease. For severe wrinkling that creates complex shadow patterns across the image, a combination of manual selection and AI fill tools may be needed, along with reference to any surviving undamaged areas for tonal calibration.
