Restoring Crinkled and Wrinkled Photographs

Scanning Warped Photographs

On a flatbed scanner, avoid pressing a warped photograph flat with the scanner lid — the mechanical pressure can crack a photograph that has become rigid in its warped state. Instead, use the scanner with the lid fully open (or removed if possible), accept that the unfocused areas away from the glass surface will be somewhat softer, and post-process the scan to address the geometric distortion. Alternatively, a copy stand setup with a camera can photograph the document under raking light that reveals the surface texture, allowing subsequent digital correction of the distortion.

Digital Geometric Correction

Geometric distortion correction tools can straighten lines that appear curved due to physical warping.
