Restoring 1910s Photos: The Decade Photography Went to War
There's a photograph in my collection that I didn't find in a family album. I found it at an estate sale, in a shoebox with forty others — all soldiers, all young, none identified.
The date stamp on the mount places it between 1916 and 1918. A young man in a private's uniform stands at attention before a painted backdrop meant to suggest an outdoor scene. His expression is determinedly serious, the way people look when they're trying very hard to look brave. He was probably nineteen or twenty. He might have come home. He might not have.
I restored the photograph anyway. I don't know who he is, but somewhere there are grandchildren and great-grandchildren who might.
The 1910s were a strange decade for photography. Consumer cameras were becoming genuinely affordable — Kodak's Brownie had been on the market since 1900 — but the defining images of the decade came from the war. Studio portraits of soldiers before deployment. Snapshot photographs from the front. Family photographs taken by people who understood, perhaps for the first time, that there was no guarantee of more photographs.
The Photographic Technology of 1910-1919
Understanding what you're working with helps you restore it properly.
Silver gelatin continued to dominate, but the processing chemistry had evolved. Pre-war 1910s photos often have a slightly cooler, crisper quality than their Edwardian predecessors. Wartime photographs — especially those taken in the field or quickly processed — show more chemical inconsistency: uneven development, fixing failures, contaminated chemistry.
Nitrate film was the standard for sheet film and roll film throughout the 1910s. Nitrate is chemically unstable and famously flammable — archivists have nightmares about nitrate fires — but for family snapshots, the more common problem is the distinctive pale yellow deterioration pattern when nitrate breaks down over decades.
Contact prints were common for amateur photography. You'd expose the film in a camera, then print by placing the negative directly on paper and exposing to light. The resulting prints are small — often 2.5x4 inches — but potentially very sharp, since there's no enlargement step to amplify grain.
Cyanotype makes occasional appearances in 1910s collections. The characteristic blue-green color of cyanotypes is unmistakable. They're actually quite stable compared to silver-based prints, but the blue channels often shift over time.
Typical Damage Patterns in 1910s Photos
Trench photography damage is its own category. Photos taken or processed in the field often show moisture damage, chemical contamination, and the distinctive spotting from dust particles during processing. The damage patterns are irregular and often overlay facial detail.
Fading in the highlights is characteristic of 1910s silver gelatin. The bright areas — sky, skin in direct light, white fabrics — often show the earliest degradation. You'll see the highlight detail go grey while the shadows still have some depth.
Red spot disease (also called measles) appears as small reddish-brown spots scattered across the image. It's caused by a specific type of chemical contamination during processing. AI handles these well because they're relatively uniform in size and color.
Portrait studio degradation — for the formal portraits, which were made by professional studios under controlled conditions — tends to be more uniform. Studio prints of this era were often toned (gold or selenium toning) to improve stability, and this toning sometimes survives while the underlying silver has faded.
The Soldier Portraits
For the millions of families who have WWI-era soldier portraits, restoration carries particular weight.
These photographs were often taken hurriedly, in commercial studios near training camps, right before deployment. The photography was good — commercial portrait photographers in 1916 knew their business — but the conditions weren't ideal, and the decades since have not been kind.
What I typically find when working with WWI soldier portraits:
The faces are usually in reasonable condition — studio lighting was consistent, the subjects were stationary, and the photographers knew how to get a clear exposure. What deteriorates first is the background, the uniform details, and the mount card itself.
AI restoration excels at bringing back uniform details: the chevrons on a sleeve, the branch insignia, the buttons. These are regular geometric elements that the AI can reconstruct reliably even from faded originals.
The faces respond well to GFPGAN enhancement. A 1910s studio portrait often has enough original detail to produce genuinely sharp facial reconstruction — you can see individual features, not just a generalized face.
Scanning Advice for 1910s Photos
Small contact prints need high DPI. For 2.5x4 inch prints, I recommend 1200-2400 DPI. The math: at 1200 DPI, you get a 3000x4800 pixel file. At 2400 DPI, you have room to print enlarged at modern standards.
Mounted cabinet cards and similar formats can be scanned at 600-800 DPI given their larger size. The mounting card often contains printed studio information on the back — scan the back too, since it may give you location and date information for identification.
Nitrate negatives need special handling. If you have 1910s negatives that smell slightly of vinegar or show crystallization, consult an archivist before attempting home scanning. Deteriorating nitrate is both a safety concern and a fragility concern.
Working with Unidentified Photographs
The estate-sale soldier photograph is not unusual. Millions of 1910s photographs have become separated from their family contexts. The good news is that genealogical databases, social media groups, and historical societies have developed tools for identifying such images.
Once you have a good restoration, consider sharing it with:
- Facebook genealogy groups (searching by location, military unit, or approximate date)

- State historical societies, which often maintain portrait identification projects
